Mr. Giuseppe Piantoni, with a previous experience in the manufacturing of wooden wagons, decides to make a change in his business in order to meet the increasing use of trucks in postwar Italy; he founded Co.R.A.M ( acronyms of Costruzioni Ricambi Auto Moto ), as a company that manufactured valves for internal combustion enginees.
60’S AND 70’S
In those years Coram develops new business relationships in Italy and abroad with important manufacturers of vehicles, promoting a remarkable growth on a productive level, that concerned not only the number of employees, but was also an organizational and technological growth ,with the introduction of the first semi-automatic machines. The range of products expands also to sheet metal forming and welding after the aquisition of a local firm operating in this field for industrial vehicles. In 1975 the society becomes an S.p.A. and moves into a new complex, that is still the main location of the company.
The year 1980 is a fundamental moment for Coram: the first hydraulic jack is manufactured and the first independent design activities of vehicles components are started. Meanwhile the number of employees reaches 180 and in 1985 an important strategic choice is made: Coram decides to give up producing valves, thus supporting a bigger development of more complex products like steering columns, produced from 1987. In those years the first welding robots and automatic machines are introduced, improving the quality of products and performances.
In those years Coram affirms itself in the production of steering columns for industrial vehicles and agricultural machines. In 1993 the company is certified EN ISO 9001: it is one of the first companies in the area to obtain this world renowned quality certification. In those years Coram also continues the growing process of its production range, with the taking over in 1996 of a part of TRW France, and the starting of the production of gearbox levers for industrial and agricultural vehicles. In 1997 the Technical Office is reorganized with the introduction of the first 3D CAD system; with this system is designed an innovative and light hydraulic jack, with components made of alloy and plastic, for an important SUV producer. In 1998 Coram inaugurates a new productive plant in Cologne for the specialized production of front axles for two wheel drive tractors. In 1999 Coram becomes the European market leader in the production of Hydraulic jacks, regards to the number of units manufactured.
2000 - 2003
In the first years of the new millenium Coram is still expanding its product range; through the acquisition of the Stilfreni Group (Stilfreni, Stilmec Sud ed Eti) starts the production of special brakes and light transmissions. In 2001 starts the reorganization process , the first step towards an integrated management of the companies of the Group : the productive functions are conducted in the plants while the Sales, Planning and Administration functions are conducted in the new plant in Brescia, with the first remote connections. In 2002 a new plant in Cologne is inaugurated, where are relized the following activities: cutting and bending of tubes and blanking and laser cutting of plate,in order to create space for a new centralized warehouse in the headquarters.
2004 - 2010
In June 2004 after the unfortunate death of Giuseppe piantoni, the founder of the company, caused by a short disease, Mr. Angelo Piantoni, who was already working in the Group since 1985, takes over his father Giuseppe Piantoni, the founder, as C.E.O. of the Group. An important process of reorganization and expansion of the Group starts with the foundation of BSM/Coram North America through the acquisition of a part of the american firm of Minneapolis (MN), specialized in the production of steering columns in the USA; Coram Asia Co Ltd is also founded; here are produced hydraulic kjacks, in order to compete with the pressing Asian competition. Abroad companies, dislocated in strategic locations from the point of view of the market growth are the starting platform to gather new business development opportunities. In 2007 Coram Group celebrates 50 years of activity. In 2009 Coram Group answers to the international crisis with the growth of its productive efficiency, cuts to the expences, reduction of inventories, internal down-sizing, agreements with banks and suppliers. During the crisis the activity of research and development goes on, with special attention to steering column adjustable in height and incline, with the acquisition of important new orders.
Even with the market heavily conditioned by the international crisis Coram tries establish itself in other emerginc countries, completing business collaboration in India and Brasil and founding, in 2013, CORAM USA LLC, that the following year will start the assembly and distribution of CORAM products in North America. In 2014 the market suffers from a new downward trend and the company focuses on the improvement of its organization, with the introduction of SAP in all its companies, the unification of all administrative and quality system procedure at a global level and with the introduction of the first Lean Production projects, to orient the Group’s firms toward sales initiative with new customers.
The CORAM Group is ready to meet the new challenges of the coming decade, with a new organization and a great desire to grow our international markets, but this year we also pause to celebrate the 60th anniversary of CORAM's founding.
